How to Add an AI Chatbot to WordPress (One Script, No Plugin Needed)
Create your agent, copy the one-line script from the Install tab, then paste it into a header and footer scripts plugin such as WPCode as a Site Wide Footer HTML snippet. Clear your caches and test in a private window. No heavy chatbot plugin is needed.
Step by step
- Build the agent. Paste your website link into the Clipaist workspace and press Build my agent, then test it in the Test chat tab.
- Copy the code. Open the Install tab and press Copy code. It is one script line with your own key.
- Add it with a snippet plugin. Install WPCode (or any header and footer scripts plugin), add an HTML snippet, paste the line and choose Site Wide Footer.
- Clear caches. Purge your caching plugin, server cache and CDN so visitors get the updated page.
- Test as a visitor. Open your site in a private window, look for the round chat button and send a test question.
Good to know
- A snippet plugin keeps the code outside your theme, so a theme update never removes it.
- Without a plugin, add the line to footer.php of a child theme just before the closing body tag. Block themes have no footer.php; use a snippet plugin or a Custom HTML block in the footer template part.
- For WooCommerce shops, add shipping times, returns and payment methods to Knowledge. The standard agent does not read live orders.
If something does not work
View the page source and search for agent-widget.js. If it is missing, the code is not active or is in the wrong place. If it is there, check Allowed websites in your agent settings (the exact address must be listed, or leave it empty while testing), clear your site cache or CDN, and check that an ad blocker or a Content Security Policy is not blocking scripts.
Script-delay or minify-combine plugins can postpone the widget. Exclude agent-widget.js from those features.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a WordPress chatbot plugin?
No. The widget is one script line. A scripts plugin is only a convenient place to paste it.
Will it slow my site?
The script loads with async, so it does not block rendering. Keep it in the footer.
Does it work with Elementor or Divi?
Yes. Use the site-wide custom code option so the chat appears on every page.
